Board Game Designers Of Color
With Black Lives Matter on everyone's minds, I want to highlight and share various things from Black creators to amplify them and their work. While I found many lists for things like books and video games, I couldn't find one for board games. So I have curated one myself.
Rap Godz
Rap Godz is the first game from Board Game Brothas and is designed by Omari Akil. It is a modern board game that puts you in the role of an up and coming hip-hop artist on your path to greatness using both storytelling and strategy for 2-4 players.
Tattoo Stories
Tattoo Stories from Bicycle Cards and is designed by Eric Slauson. It is a party game of drawing fun tattoos and telling the best stories to win over the customer for 4-6 players.
Black Card Revoked
Black Card Revoked is designed by Latesha Williams and is a fun and nostalgia-filled game celebrating American black popular culture that plays up to 6 players.
Discount Salmon
Discount Salmon from Black-owned Water Bear Games is designed by Marcus Ross and Cara Heacock. In this game, it's your job to catch defective fish from its depths, and fix them up to sell them. This speed-based, twick-taking games plays 2-5 players.
Rising Sun
Rising Sun from CMON is designed by Eric M. Lang, who is also known for designing Blood Rage, Chaos in the Old World, and Arcadia Quest. It is a board game for 3 to 5 players set in legendary feudal Japan where players have to lead their clans to victory as the Kami descend from the heavens.
The Ultimate Clap Back
The Ultimate Clap Back is designed MaryMartha Ford-Dieng and plays 3+ people. It is a fast-paced game of wordplay where you are trying to, you guessed it, make the ultimate clap back..
The Game of 49
The Game of 49 from Breaking Games is designed by Mark Corsey. Starting with $49 apiece, players bid to buy spaces on the 49-square (7-by-7) game board. First player to claim four spots in a row wins.
BLITZ CHAMPZ
BLITZ CHAMPZ, which is designed by Adrienne Smith, is a fun and competitive card game that teaches and tests football knowledge, strategy, and math skills which makes it great for kids. It plays 2-6 players and is both quick to learn and play.
7 & 7
7 & 7 from Time Infinity Games is designed by Cory Goff. In 7 & 7, it is up to you to choose your faction between Good and Evil. You need to collect either all seven VIRTUES or all seven SINS before your competition and this game is for 2-5 players.
Flip and Find's Diner
Flip and Find's Diner from Spontaneously Combustible Games is by Gerald King III. In this memory game, players flip tiles to find the ingredients to complete orders to collect money (more complex orders are more valuable) and tips.
Trial and Triumph
Trial and Triumph from JustUs Junkie's is designed by April Preyar. It was designed to guide teens in their interactions with law enforcement. The game uses a simple roll-and-move format to chart the course of a player navigating between the World of Possibilities and the World of Trouble. The object of the game is to get out of the World of Trouble with a Clean Slate by being the first player to arrive at the Triumph space.
Life As A BlackMan
Life As A BlackMan from Underground Games, Inc., a Black owned game company, is designed by Chuck Sawyer. This is a game with a political message: It's harder than you think to be young and black. Players all start as 18-year-old black person either in Glamourwood, Black University, the Military, or in the Ghetto. Through die rolls, players work their way through the randomly selected starting areas and into Downtown, an approximation of life in the real world.
Bridwiser
Birdwiser is designed by Chidi Paige. In this card game, you want to get rid of the birds in your hand by matching their unique identification marks. You'll also have to watch out for bad weather and feral cats.
